Automobile Insurance: What You Need to Know to Travel with Peace of Mind

Do you have plans to travel to the U.S. by car?  Whether you’re shopping for a day, spending a week-end in New York, or going on a trip across the United States, some precautions are necessary, such as amending your car insurance

Liability insurance
In Quebec, the law requires car owners to have liability insurance of at least $50,000.  Civil liability insurance covers material damage caused by the vehicle to others. It also covers damage to your vehicle in the event of an accident where you are not at fault.

The majority of Quebec drivers opt for liability coverage of $1,000,000.  However, if you cross the U.S. border, it is strongly suggested to increase coverage to $2,000,000.  Why? Because in an accident any bodily damage you cause to others, in addition to material damages, will be paid by your civil liability insurance.

Collision insurance
Collision coverage is for damage to your vehicle if you cause an accident. While not mandatory in Quebec, this coverage is particularly useful when travelling to the U.S. with your car.  If you are involved in an accident for which you are not at fault, you will not have to take legal action in order to be compensated: your insurer will pay for the damage

.

And the Société d’assurance automobile du Québec?
The SAAQ indemnifies Quebecers who are injured in a car accident.  This coverage is valid anywhere in the world, regardless of who is responsible for the accident, as long as your stay abroad does not exceed 6 months.  Although the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec and Société d’assurance automobile du Québec will cover your expenses if you are hospitalized following a car accident, it is still advisable to take out private medical-hospital insurance before leaving for another country.  This insurance will protect you if you suddenly become ill, or need emergency healthcare.

It can be quite enjoyable and economical to travel in your car at your own pace, following a specific itinerary or touring every corner as the mood takes you.  A simple phone call to your insurer and you can travel worry free.  And for even more security, why not take the opportunity to subscribe to a roadside assistance service?  It is inexpensive and so convenient!
