Driver fatigue: Danger!

Especially during the cold season, driving at night increases the dangers associated with falling asleep behind the wheel.

An underrated danger, driver fatigue is an insidious risk that can affect any driver. Just like alcohol, driver fatigue compromises a driver’s reflexes by slowing reaction time and decreasing awareness.

According to the IBC (Insurance Bureau of Canada) data, at least 20% of Canadians – an estimated 4.1 million people – admit they have nodded off at the wheel in the past 12 months.  Every year, more than 400 Canadians die because of drowsy drivers.

Having your security at heart, National Bank Insurance has some tips and advice for you to avoid this danger that can affect anyone!

  • Drive only when you are well rested.

  • Don’t take the wheel if you feel tired, no matter the time or place.

  • Take a nap or do some exercise, cancel or postpone your trip, or let someone else drive who is well rested.

  • Stay awake. Listen to a talk show or to lively music.

  • Bring along a companion for long-distance trips.

  • Keep a constant eye on road signs and traffic.

  • If you are driving over a long distance, stop every two hours to rest.

  • Beware of the effects of caffeine. It may give you a false feeling of awareness even though your reflexes are slower!
