Watch for Deer While Driving! Safety Tips
You’ve probably seen the wildlife signs posted along the roads of Quebec indicating that animals are not only on the signs; or the ones warning of danger – risk of collision. White-tailed deer and moose – proud representatives of Quebec wildlife – are involved in more than 6,000 road accidents every year. While there is no guaranteed way to avoid hitting an animal, there are a few things you can do to minimize the risks. Here are a few safety tips.
- Obey speed limits at all times and stay alert, especially in areas where Transport Quebec signs indicate the possible presence of wildlife.
- Dusk and dawn are the peak danger times for collisions with wildlife. Avoid distractions and actively scan the sides of the road. Be extra careful when brush and tall grass grow near the road as well as on curves and slopes.
- If you see one deer by the side of the road or crossing in front of your vehicle, watch out: they often travel in groups so chances are others are waiting to cross the road.
- Keep your windshield and headlights clean.
- Always wear a seatbelt.
If a collision seems unavoidable
- Hold the steering wheel firmly.
- Apply the brakes several times and put on your emergency flashers to warn drivers behind you.
- Avoid hard swerving: it is better to slow down gradually than to try to avoid the animal as the risk of serious injury is much higher if you head into oncoming traffic.
The risks of hitting a deer or moose are highest during the months of June and July and October and November. But – make no mistake – this type of accident can occur at any time throughout the year, day or night. And above all, don’t think that it won’t happen to you: on certain roads of Quebec, collisions with wildlife represent more than 50% of all accidents.
