Preventing water damage
Your policy provides basic coverage against the most common accidental water damage occurrences in your home. Additional protection is available which covers a wider range of losses, including sewer backup. In most cases, with some foresight you can protect yourself against these types of losses.
For example:
- Never leave your washing machine on when you leave home
- Have your roof inspected to ensure it is free of cracks
- Check rainwater gutters – leaves or trash can prevent water evacuation from the roof
- At the end fall, turn off the outdoor tap
Putting a stop to thieves
It is a known fact that thefts are more frequent during the summer, in good weather, during the vacation period.
Before leaving your home we suggest you take the following precautions:
- Ask a neighbour to pick up your mail
- Make arrangements to stop newspaper deliveries
- If you are leaving for several weeks, have someone mow your lawn
- Use timers on lights to make it look as if you are still at home and not relaxing on the beach!
Fire prevention
Cooking fires, especially those resulting from cooking oil, and smokers' materials are the leading cause of residential fires.
- Install at least one smoke detector on each floor. Inspect them once a month and change the batteries when changing time in the spring and in the fall.
- Store flammable liquids such as paint, solvents, or the like, away from sources of heat.
- Don’t forget that prevention could save the life of someone you love!
Equipment in working order
Prevention also means ensuring a regular maintenance of some types of equipment in your home. Chimney sweeping, for example, could not only prevent fires but also avoid the inconvenience of having your furniture cleaned because of thick smoke emanations.
