Your car becomes a target for thieves every time you:

  • Leave the keys in the ignition while you’re out of the car
  • Don’t lock the doors, or leave the windows or sunroof open and unattended
  • Leave the engine running when you get out of the car

Be vigilant at all times

The best way to prevent car theft is to be vigilant. Even if you're just leaving your car for a few minutes to run into a convenience store, be sure to close the windows and sunroof, turn the engine off, take your key out of the ignition and lock your doors.  Keep in mind that it only takes an experienced thief between 30 seconds and 3 minutes to steal a car.

To avoid buying a stolen vehicle or stolen car parts, you should only do business with reputable dealerships and repair shops.

It’s a myth that cars are stolen only at night. In 2010, more than a third of auto thefts took place in broad daylight, between 6 a.m. and noon. If you stay alert and adopt good habits, you can help fight one of the most common police-reported offences.
