Preventing car theft
Car theft is a veritable scourge in Quebec. The numbers speak for themselves. In 2008, there was one vehicle stolen every 14 minutes! However, with a few simple precautions, you can reduce the risk of being the victim of car theft. As a matter of fact, one stolen vehicle out of five could be prevented if it wasn’t for its owner’s negligence.
- Never leave packages in plain view in your car! Any items that may be tempting for thieves should be kept out of sight. Put your CDs, your laptop or any other package or valuable in the glove compartment or in the trunk of your car.
- Never leave the car door unlocked or the windows down, even if you’re just getting out a few minutes to pay for gas, for instance! You’d be surprised how fast thieves can be!
- Never leave your running vehicle unattended.
- When you park your car, block the wheels by turning them to one side and put the handbrake to make it more difficult for thieves to tow your vehicle away.
- Never hide your spare key in a magnetic box underneath your car. Thieves know where to find it!
