Fire prevention
Fire is a major event that can be disastrous. Having your best interests at heart, National Bank Insurance has some tips and advice for preventing fires. Taking these simple precautions can greatly reduce the risk of fire in your home and the possible increase of your home insurance premium if such an event should occur.
- Install at least one smoke detector on each floor. Be sure one is near sleeping areas. Inspect them every month and replace the batteries when you reset your clock in the spring and fall. You should also replace your smoke detectors after 10 years.
- Store flammable liquids such as paint and solvents away from heat sources, in approved containers. Store gasoline in well-ventilated areas only and never store propane indoors.
- Purchasing a fire extinguisher might come in very handy, such as in the kitchen.
- Never leave candles burning unattended; they could be knocked over by children or pets.
- Never smoke in bed. Every year, smoker’s items are the cause of numerous fires.
- Never use a barbecue indoors.
- Never leave frying oil unattended. When cooking with oil, always use an appliance with a thermostat.
- Always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations when using a wood burning stove. Never use any type of gasoline to light the fire and make sure all ashes are collected in a metal container.
- Keep your heating system properly maintained. Have it inspected on a regular basis by a qualified professional.
- Never overload electrical outlets by using extension cords. This will avoid overloading the circuit. You should also change cords that are worn or frayed.
- Chimney sweeping is essential. Make sure this is done by an experienced professional recognized by the Quebec Association des professionnels du chauffage (APC).
- Have your electrical panel checked every 20 years.
We also strongly recommend that you have an evacuation plan, which should cover the following aspects:
- Identify two ways out of every room.
- Practice your evacuation plan with everyone in your home.
- Decide on a pre-arranged meeting place outside where you may safely call for help.
- Remind everyone in your home they must remain outside. It is crucial never to go back into a house where there is a fire.
Don’t forget that prevention could save the life of someone you love!
