You carry your golf clubs, groceries, laptop computer, spare tire and so much more in your vehicle. Is your property insured when it’s in your car’s trunk? The answer is: It depends.
You carry your golf clubs, groceries, laptop computer, spare tire and so much more in your vehicle. Is your property insured when it’s in your car’s trunk? The answer is: It depends.
Auto-related accessories
As long as you’ve chosen the appropriate coverage, your vehicle and its accessories are usually covered by your auto insurance. For example, the following are included:
- Spare tire
- Jack
- Emergency kit
Your winter tires stored in your garage are also covered by your auto insurance policy!
Everything else
Everything that’s not considered an auto-related accessory is covered by your home insurance policy, depending on the specified coverage, exclusions and limits. That applies to the following:
- Golf clubs
- Laptop computer
- Hockey bag
- Groceries
If any of those items are stolen, you’ll have to make a claim under your home insurance policy. In certain cases, if you’re involved in a collision but are not at fault, your belongings carried in the vehicle may be compensated by the other driver’s civil liability coverage.
Trunk, glove compartment and back seat
Where the items were located inside the vehicle when they were stolen isn’t important. Even though it’s not smart to leave anything in plain view, you would still be compensated by your insurer if an unfortunate event occurred.
But don’t take chances on purpose! Better safe than sorry.
