Water Damage

If water has damaged your property, follow these recommendations to protect your belongings and prevent further damage while waiting for experts to intervene.

Take precautions and secure the area

  • Do not enter the basement if the electrical current is still active and the water level is likely to short-circuit electrical outlets.
  • If you have gas appliances and detect a smell, contact Énergir.
  • Locate and close the water supply valve, if applicable.
  • Water from flooding and sewer backups can have adverse health effects. Wear appropriate equipment for your safety (safety glasses, gloves, N95-type mask, and boots).
  • Turn off the electricity.

Limit the damage

  • If possible, move objects that have not been touched by water to a safe place.
  • Try to remove as much water as possible by using a pump and a workshop vacuum.
  • After removing the water, install a dehumidifier as quickly as possible (ideally commercial) to prevent the formation of mould. The humidity should be below 60%.
  • Do not use any heating, as it accelerates mould growth.
  • If possible, isolate the affected area with a plastic sheet and tape to prevent the moisture from causing collateral damage to other parts of the home.

Clean and disinfect affected areas

  • Remove and dispose of all wet objects. Only solid and non-porous objects can be cleaned and disinfected.
  • Remove and dispose of all construction materials that have come into contact with contaminated water.
  • Clean and disinfect walls and floors with a bleach-free disinfectant cleaner.
  • Be careful! Buildings constructed before 1990 may contain asbestos. For more information, we strongly recommend that you contact a specialist before stripping walls or floors.

Ventilate and dry properly

  • Once cleaning and disinfection are complete, be sure to increase air circulation to dry the affected area by combining the use of fans and the dehumidifier.
  • Don't rebuild right away! Make sure the areas are properly dried before starting anything.
  • Before restoring electricity, make sure to have your electrical system inspected by a qualified professional to avoid any risk.

Prepare your claim

  • During the entire process, take photos and videos of the damage, as well as each cleaning step.
  • Make sure to document any changes or issues that may appear in the following days, such as the appearance of mould.
  • Make a list of the damaged goods.
  • Keep receipts and all supporting documents related to expenses incurred, including living expenses if your home is uninhabitable.
  • There are government assistance programs for damage not covered by insurance. Check if your situation may be eligible.
