What is identity theft?
Identity theft is any instance where your personal information is collected or used without your knowledge for fraudulent purposes. This is when a person uses your personal information to commit fraud, deception or any other criminal act, among other things.
A concrete example: online fraud
There are many ways for an ill-intentioned person to collect your personal information online: through phishing or hacking, or by using fake email addresses, fake websites or malware.
After collecting your personal information, a fraudster might use this information to take out a loan in your name, for example. Imagine the consequences this could have on your credit rating.
